Pre-Installation Guide
- What is polycarbonate awning?
- A polycarbonate awning is a stationary awning product with brackets that is permanently attached to your home, business or other structure. It provides protection from rain, snow, and hail. These products can also provide protection from the sun and UV rays.
Typically, a polycarbonate awning is smaller in projected size and may be available in a variety of widths and, depending on the style, can be connected to allow for customers to customize width coverage, if needed.
Follow Up Questions
1. What is polycarbonate? Answer: Polycarbonates (PC) are a group of thermoplastic polymers containing carbonate groups in their chemical structures. Polycarbonates when used in engineering materials are proven to be stronger and more break resistant than most other plastics. Polycarbonates can range in thickness, density (hollow or solid), clarity and textures depending on the individual manufacturing process.
2. What makes polycarbonate better than glass? Polycarbonate is lighter in weight. Solid sheets are virtually unbreakable and have more flexibility and strength than glass. - What differentiates Advanings polycarbonate awnings from its competitors?
- Advanings polycarbonate awning series collections; PN, PA, & PS feature a 1/8″ solid sheet of virgin material polycarbonate. This polycarbonate sheet when combined with the quality components included makes for a superior product that outperforms and outlasts similar competitors on the market today.
•Polycarbonate Strength: When compared to others polycarbonate awnings, one major difference is the polycarbonate strength and quality. As most competitors offer low-cost hollow polycarbonate typically made of lesser-grade materials containing impurities that are weak to impact stresses and heavy loads. Advaning’s solid sheets are virtually unbreakable and have been tested to withstand from 200 lbs. up to 550 lbs. (depending on size and series).
•Polycarbonate Structure: Hollow sheets are prone to dust, moisture, and mold collection within the cavities. Due to the structural design of the cavities, they are difficult to clean and will need special equipment or replacement when dirty. Advaning polycarbonate sheets are solid and require minimal maintenance.
•Polycarbonate Seams: To save money on shipping, competitors offer connectable polycarbonate sheets that require a plastic connection piece that connects two or more smaller sheets. On top of being unsightly, this plastic connection piece is typically made of cheap non-uv-rated plastic which tends to break or crack easily when exposed to the elements.
•Brackets; Competitors often come with plastic brackets that like the connection pieces are typically never UV-rated and will not last long when exposed to the sun’s rays. Advaning offers 3 styles of brackets that are made of materials proven to last in the elements; PA series includes die-cut solid aluminum brackets powder coated and finished in metallic silver. PN series includes an injection mold nylon with fiberglass bracket in either Black or White. PS series includes die-cut solid steel brackets powder coated in a charcoal gray color. The unique design of the PN an PS series allows users to connect multiple units side by side to achieve custom widths.
•Assembly Components: Most competitors offer lower-grade rubber seals and installation hardware. Advaning offers EPDM-rated rubber seals, top quality aluminum front / rear bar caps, UV-rated plastic components and SS304-rated installation hardware
•Warranty and Service: Most competitors do not offer a warranty beyond the return or grace 30-day period. Advaning is proud to include a 1-year warranty along with lifetime customer support from our Orange County California-based service center. - Where can I purchase Advaning products?
- Advaning awning products can be purchased online via most major online retailers and directly from www.advaningshop.com. or from our growing list of regional distributors/installers. For a list of regional distributors/installers please send an email to service@advaning.com along with your zip code or complete address.

NICE LOOKING SIMPLE AWNING FOR OUR FRENCH DOORS, BUT INSTALLATION WAS NOT SIMPLE – Used two of the ADVANING PA Series awning kits to cover the full width of French doors for protection from SW weather and sun exposure (in NM high desert). The product installation instructions warned me about need for TWO people (& 2 ladders), and I should have taken that warning more literately to mean that this is NOT a simple DIY project for just one person, especially if the outside wall is a stucco type wall, and you have to be concerned about gusty (heavy at times) wind and some winter snow loads on this awning. A stucco wall will not provide a sufficiently hard surface and strength to fasten the two (or four) aluminum brackets, when using only the hardware provided in the kit. The instructions suggest to assemble the whole awning unit on the ground and then lift it up to the wall…presumably with the help of two people and two ladders,… (and maybe a third person to mark the wall for placement holes/anchors to be per-installed?)
My installation plan had to be extensively adapted to make it possible to install with only one person (myself), and that evolved into also requiring that only one bracket at a time would be installed, and after being installed I wanted to be able to lift only the plastic cover up the ladder and just drop it onto the pre-installed brackets. The two bolts at the back of the plastic awning cover were changed to be longer and pre-fastened so that it could function as a way to drop-n-lock into the bracket, without having to hold the 40″x30″ plastic at the same time as trying to fasten it in place.
See the two photos of my added brackets that I fabricated to pre-install on the wall and provide bolts pointing outwards to the frame of the awnings. A lot of extra work involved in all this, but it was satisfying and worth it.

NOT FOR WINTER WEATHER!!!! – So.. this awning was indeed difficult to install. The contractor who did our siding and my husband worked on it together, it took them approximately two hours to assemble and install it. We were happy with it during the first rain storms but it was up for less than two weeks when we got our first snow of the year. Yes, it was wet, heavy snow but it was six inches at most. The awning pulled away from the house, pulling the screws out of the wood and damaged our new siding. We will look for something much more sturdy.
