FAQ’s
  • What is polycarbonate awning?
  • A polycarbonate awning is a stationary awning product with brackets that is permanently attached to your home, business or other structure. It provides protection from rain, snow, and hail. These products can also provide protection from the sun and UV rays.
Typically, a polycarbonate awning is smaller in projected size and may be available in a variety of widths and, depending on the style, can be connected to allow for customers to customize width coverage, if needed.

    Follow Up Questions
    1. What is polycarbonate? Answer: Polycarbonates (PC) are a group of thermoplastic polymers containing carbonate groups in their chemical structures. Polycarbonates when used in engineering materials are proven to be stronger and more break resistant than most other plastics. Polycarbonates can range in thickness, density (hollow or solid), clarity and textures depending on the individual manufacturing process.
    2. What makes polycarbonate better than glass? Polycarbonate is lighter in weight. Solid sheets are virtually unbreakable and have more flexibility and strength than glass.
  • What differentiates Advanings polycarbonate awnings from its competitors?
  • Advanings polycarbonate awning series collections; PN, PA, & PS feature a 1/8″ solid sheet of virgin material polycarbonate. This polycarbonate sheet when combined with the quality components included makes for a superior product that outperforms and outlasts similar competitors on the market today.
•Polycarbonate Strength: When compared to others polycarbonate awnings, one major difference is the polycarbonate strength and quality. As most competitors offer low-cost hollow polycarbonate typically made of lesser-grade materials containing impurities that are weak to impact stresses and heavy loads. Advaning’s solid sheets are virtually unbreakable and have been tested to withstand from 200 lbs. up to 550 lbs. (depending on size and series).
•Polycarbonate Structure: Hollow sheets are prone to dust, moisture, and mold collection within the cavities. Due to the structural design of the cavities, they are difficult to clean and will need special equipment or replacement when dirty. Advaning polycarbonate sheets are solid and require minimal maintenance.
•Polycarbonate Seams: To save money on shipping, competitors offer connectable polycarbonate sheets that require a plastic connection piece that connects two or more smaller sheets. On top of being unsightly, this plastic connection piece is typically made of cheap non-uv-rated plastic which tends to break or crack easily when exposed to the elements.
•Brackets; Competitors often come with plastic brackets that like the connection pieces are typically never UV-rated and will not last long when exposed to the sun’s rays. Advaning offers 3 styles of brackets that are made of materials proven to last in the elements; PA series includes die-cut solid aluminum brackets powder coated and finished in metallic silver. PN series includes an injection mold nylon with fiberglass bracket in either Black or White. PS series includes die-cut solid steel brackets powder coated in a charcoal gray color. The unique design of the PN an PS series allows users to connect multiple units side by side to achieve custom widths.
•Assembly Components: Most competitors offer lower-grade rubber seals and installation hardware. Advaning offers EPDM-rated rubber seals, top quality aluminum front / rear bar caps, UV-rated plastic components and SS304-rated installation hardware
•Warranty and Service: Most competitors do not offer a warranty beyond the return or grace 30-day period. Advaning is proud to include a 1-year warranty along with lifetime customer support from our Orange County California-based service center.
  • Where can I purchase Advaning products?

For a list of regional distributors/installers please send an email to service@advaning.com along with your zip code or complete address.

GET THE MASONRY EXPANSION BOLTS FROM ADVANING FOR BRICK INSTALLATION. HEED THE INSTRUCTIONS! -We installed this awning on our brick house. The hardware that is included in the package is NOT for masonry. The company sells the masonry hardware (expansion bolts) separately. Do not try to get them anywhere else. Although it is possible to purchase expansion bolts from the hardware store, the ones that came from Advaning are different: Stainless Steel; Hex head, and most importantly, the screw is NOT attached to the sleeve. This means you can set the sleeve then remove the bolt for installation and the hex head allows you to back out the bolt if it is too far into the wall.

Note that the directions for masonry installation are not sufficiently detailed. I raised this issue with customer service in January 2019, so hopefully they will have improved this now. The expansion bolt is supposed to be 3-1/4 inch long, but they tell you to drill a 3-1/2 inch pilot hole. If you set the bolt in that far, it is too short for the top holes on the bracket (for some reason to top of these are about 1/2′ out from the wall, so they require the bolt to stick out from the wall further than the bottom holes). Also, the back edge rubber gasket does not fit tightly to the awning, so it will fall off if you are not paying attention. But, it is exactly the correct length so don’t cut it if it has slid down.

It is impossible to install this with one person. Two is the minimum, because you assemble the awning before mounting it to the wall. The dimensions make it impossible to hold both sides and see over the awning to make sure it is level for drilling the pilot holes for mounting screws.

Unlike many reviewers here, I did not have difficulty assembling the brackets to the Polycarbonate–all by myself (while the handyman made three trips to the hardware store ISO the right expansion bolts–no success). The seals are tight but it fit. Per the instructions, I used a wood block (part of a 2 x 4 about 8 inches long) and a rubber mallet. Tapped it in a little at a time all along the length so I went over every few inches several times. If you try to rush this, you will not succeed at all. It took about 45 minutes. Wear gloves so you don’t get the giant splinter I did from trying to hold the block of wood with bare hands (This task is barely within my skill set).

The handyman spent hours trying to mount this to the wall with the non-company expansion bolts found at the local hardware store, and without a helper. No success. Total waste of time.

Read the directions for the type of install before you start the job. Make sure you have the correct hardware from the company (the expansion bolts can be ordered on teh Advaning website, but they take several days to arrive so plan accordingly). Don’t even try to install the awning against a wall with fewer than 2 persons on the job. Measure carefully. There is no play in the instructions or the measurements. Attention to detail, patience, and planning will save time on the total install. I doubt you will succeed if you think you don’t need to read the instructions before you start.

Once installed, it is beautiful and functional. I do wish that the PN series had metal brackets (these are plastic).
Customer service was excellent. Very responsive and helpful. Overall, I recommend this product from this manufacturer.

HAIRSPRAY – For those having problems fitting the trim over the rubber gaskets, just blast the rubber with a bit of aresol hairspray before tapping them on with your mallet. Makes it slide on so much easier and the hairspray dries fast. Did not discolor or cause any problems.

IDEAL – Easy to set up and install. Anchors provided were cheap so I used my own but otherwise very happy with how these came out! Most pictures in the ad focused on rain and we have had issues with similar options during the snowy season. I bought 2 of these and they have been holding up just fine to the snow this year. Very satisfied this far.
